Why we choose Ecover & Method.
Why do we choose Ecover & Method?
When we say we live and breathe clean, we mean it. From the way we do business to how we source our ingredients to out war on ocean plastic – it’s all about finding new ways to put our clean values into practice. Even if it’s going to take a while to get there. Check out what we’re doing below.
1) CLEAN BUSINESS
To us, being good to the planet and the people around us is just as important as the bottom line. That’s why we’re certified by B Corp – the Fair Trade of companies.
2) CLEAN PLASTIC
We’re waging war on single-use plastic. Encouraging everyone to reuse, refill, and recycle wherever possible. That’s why all our bottles and caps are designed to be recycled. And by 2020 we’re committed to using only recycled plastic in all our bottles.
3) CLEAN WATER
Our phosphate-free formula helped clean the world’s waterways. Now we’re on the case to use less water – both in our products and our manufacturing process.
4) CLEAN SOURCING
We’re on the road to making our supply chain as sustainable as our ingredients. For example, we buy local when we can, and only use suppliers who share our values.
5) CLEAN INGREDIENTS
We use mostly natural plant-based ingredients because they’re renewable, biodegradable and replace dirty crude oil-based substances. Plus it makes us vegan-friendly. We’re also Leaping Bunny certified, as we never test on animals (as if).
6) CLEAN FRAGRANCES
We use fragrances that are as natural, simple and authentic as possible. They’re designed to smell fresh and wonderful – not overpower you with toxic chemicals.
7) CLEAN DESIGN
We believe in packaging design that makes a positive impact on people and the planet. That means less is more, and simple is beautiful.
8) CLEAN MANUFACTURING
It’s not just what you do, it’s how you do it. That’s why our forest factory has always been one of the most ecologically sound in the world since we built it in 1992. And now we’re working towards a zero-carbon, zero-waste footprint.
MISSION TO LEAD A CLEAN WORLD REVOLUTION.
That might make us sound too big for our boots. But the fact is, we want to redefine what clean really, truly means. For ourselves, our homes, our communities, our world.
It’s what we’ve been obsessing over for the best part of 40 years, and it’s what keeps us fearless and foolish. Today, tomorrow, always.
We’re redefining clean for the 21st century. Clean products. Clean homes. Clean values. Leading by example and making sure we try to operate as transparently as a freshwater stream – without getting too holier-than-thou about it. All to inspire people to make their world that little bit cleaner.
We’re on a mission to make cleaning even cleaner.
Pushing the envelope. Always asking if there’s a cleaner way. Collaborating to create products that will make a real difference and change attitudes for the better. Sure, we’ll make some mistakes along the way. But progress not perfection is the motto we swear by.
We’re on a mission to embrace living clean, not just clean living.
It’s much bigger than washing the dishes or doing the laundry. It’s about making you feel wonderful in your home environment. Call it harmony, call it feel-good factor, call it whatever you want. We firmly believe that if you treat your home with all the TLC it deserves, then it’ll love you right back.
We’re on a mission to champion clean behaviour.
That’s why we’re a certified B Corp – a bit like Fair Trade for companies. We may not get it right all the time. And sometimes progress can be frustratingly slow. But as a B Corp we aim to live our clean values the best we can and use our business as a force for good. Celebrate others that are great at it. And put toxic behaviours on notice wherever we see them, 24/7.
QUESTIONS, FACTS AND ANWERS!!
Where can I find Ecover safety data sheets (SDS)?
Normally you should get the safety data sheets (also called COSHH sheets or SDS) automatically through the supplier or distributor when purchasing the product. But we are of course also happy to help you if you need an extra document.
Send the EAN code (you will find it at the bottom of the barcode) + the name of your supplier and the desired language to email@example.com and we'll send you the correct safety sheet.
Why is Ecover named Ecover?
At the start, around 1980, our founders wanted a name and logo making clear that Ecover products are ecological and based on natural ingredients. The '80s were characterized by a first green wave. The terms ecology and sustainability were used more frequently. ECO refers to ecology and VER to the French word ‘vert’ which means ‘green’. The blue and green colors were deliberately chosen because they are natural colors. Blue refers to water. Ecover wants to minimise the impact of its products on aquatic life as much as possible. Green refers to nature. In everything we do, we respect the environment. Our name and logo show that Ecover considers the environment as an integral part of the economy.
Can I use Ecover products with my septic tank?
All of our products are biodegradable and friendly for your septic tank.
If you don't see the septic tank logo on the label of your bottle, it's because we didn't have enough space and other icons were more specific to that product. You can be sure that with our products (and a maintenance clear out now and then) you’ll have a happy septic tank which will last for decades and possible a lifetime.
If your system is slightly different to a septic tank or you are unsure, we would advise you to make contact with your system manufacturer to see if our products would be suitable to use.
Are Ecover products vegan?
Ecover products are people-, pet- and planet-friendly. We don’t have a vegan certification, but consider ourselves as Vegan friendly, since our products contain no animal by-products and are not tested on animals — not on whales, nor on water fleas.
All of our cleaners are certified by Leaping Bunny and Cruelty Free International. As part of our qualification, we’re regularly audited to ensure both Ecover and our suppliers comply with the comprehensive criteria of the Standard of Compassion for Animals.

Does Ecover use microbeads?
We would never use plastic microbeads in any of our products. Unfortunately because they are so small, no one is able to collect and recycle these microscopic pieces once they enter the waterways. It’s much better to never use them in the first place or use plant-based alternatives like ground apricot seeds or walnut shells.
From where does Ecover source its ingredients?
We aim to source ingredients as locally as possible. By sourcing ingredients local to our factories, we can reduce transportation impacts. Many of our ingredients are sourced within Europe. Some ingredients are not yet available locally – that’s why we continue to pioneer new ingredients and innovations that will allow us to produce ingredients locally.
What ingredients are in your products?
At Ecover we use renewable, plant based or mineral ingredients instead of petro chemical based ingredients. We make this choice because the extracting and processing of fossil ingredients requires a lot of energy. It also promotes the depletion of finite resources and contributes to global warming by mobilising fossil based CO2. Examples of the type of ingredients we use are: sugar cane in our washing-up liquids, sunflower oil and sustainably sourced palm oil in our laundry liquids, coconut oil in our cream cleanser, rape seed oil in our fabric softeners.
Occasionally we will use synthetic ingredients when we really, really have to – where it’s not appropriate to use plant based materials or they just don’t exist yet.
We always ensure that every ingredient we use is biodegradable – breaking down into the environment safely. And we choose ingredients that have low aquatic toxicity – which means having minimal impact on aquatic life.
